For as long as we can remember, the owners of Baku Bakery (1972 86th Street) have been peddling delicious Russian and Azeri cookies and cakes from their pint-sized shop on 86th Street.

Well-known in Bensonhurst for its ornate wedding cake designs, the family-owned bakery has catered bar/bat mitzvahs, sweet 16s, baby showers, christenings, and birthday parties for more than two decades. On July 1, Baku Bakery closed its doors permanently — much to the dismay of loyal customers and friends.

“In the past few weeks or so people have come up to us and said words to the effect: ‘Is it true that Baku Bakery is closing? It can’t be. You are the heart of our community and it won’t be the same without you.”’ But everything great comes to an end,” wrote the owners on the bakery’s website.

A note seen on the door of Baku Bakery last week indicated that the business was forced to shut down, because the building had been sold. (Records show that the mixed-use building, including a 1-3 family residence and a storefront, was sold in May for $1,476,000.) We reached out to the owners for comment, but did not receive a response in time for the publication of this article.

According to the Baku Bakery website, the owners have no plans to reopen the business at a new location.

“People ask us how we feel about leaving and the fact is, ‘parting is such sweet sorrow,'” the farewell post continues. “For 21 years this place was our home, and we were trying to treat you as our dearest guests. Your love, support, and positive attitude have been an inspiration for us and many great ideas that we have launched over the years.”

Goodbye, Baku Bakery. You will be missed!
