Additional Police Officers Assigned To Greenpoint and Williamsburg After a Tragic Summer

GREENPOINT – The NYPD 94th precinct will benefit from increased police numbers both in McGolrick Park and throughout Greenpoint and Williamsburg after a summer fraught with fatal violence and community concerns over hate speech.

State Assemblyman Joe Lentol was moved to write a letter to the NYPD requesting additional police resources after the murder of George Carroll, a local playwright, on Monitor Street and after swastikas were drawn on park benches in McGolrick Park.

NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill informed Lentol in a letter that Captain Peter Rose, Commanding Officer of the 94th precinct, had established a fixed post to cover the park and that security cameras had been upgraded, now livestreaming directly to the precinct.

In addition, “the precinct has just received six new recruits from the Police Academy and will be receiving an additional seven officers from the recruit class scheduled to graduate in December,” wrote Commissioner O’Neill.

Captain Rose had previously promised the Community Council that additional officers were bound for Greenpoint in October, but the NYPD had been unable to confirm exact numbers.

Speaking on the death of George Carroll, Assemblyman Lentol said, “A life can never be replaced and we know how deeply he will be missed. We must not let that ever happen again…I look forward to a safer McGolrick Park, but these additional officers will also help all of Greenpoint and Williamsburg.”
