Stop the presses: a cat cafe is coming to Fort Greene.

Yes, it’s true: named The Cat’s Meow, the pop-up cat cafe will mark its arrival in Fort Greene with an adoption event from 2-8pm this Friday, September 18, outside 354 Myrtle Avenue (at the corner of Adelphi Street). The official grand opening will be the next day (Saturday, September 19).

Touted as “Brooklyn’s first cat cafe,” the shop will be open for five weeks — through Saturday, October 24 — and is a collaboration between Fort Greene pet supplies store Who’s Your Doggy, the Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition (BBAWC), and WeRuVa Pet Food.

Hours are Wednesday through Sundays from 11am to 5pm, with Friday hours extended to 8pm for the after-work wind-down before the weekend crowd.

The idea of a cat cafe is not new, but these three groups are the first to put into action what many Brooklynites have wanted ever since New York City’s first cat cafe opened in Manhattan in December of 2014.

“We see The Cat’s Meow as a place where people can come and meet their forever friend, but also a community center where people can learn about animals, attend author readings, gallery shows, yoga classes and movies,” said Anne Levin, BBAWC president. “We hope to become an important resource center for Brooklyn.”

There will also be information from local veterinarians and other experts about pet ownership, animal rescue, and advocacy.

In addition to adoptable cats, the cafe will feature to-go drinks and snacks from Red Lantern Bicycle Cafe and Brooklyn Sweet Spot, as well as cat food and toys from WeRuVa and LoveThyBeast. A percentage of all drink and food sales goes to BBAWC.

Admission to the cafe is $5 per half hour, with children aged three and under welcomed for free. Cafe-goers interested in adopting a cat can apply on-site or online through BBAWC. The adoption fee for an adult cat at the cafe is $100, which includes the cost of spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping.

The Cat’s Meow closes Saturday, October 24, and a week later, on November 1, in its place will open the new location of Who’s Your Doggy, which is currently housed a block south at Adelphi and Willoughby.
