A Number Of Recent Car Break Ins Around Ditmas Park

Looking through the most recent batch of police reports from the 70th Precinct, we noticed along with the vegetable can-throwing and hasty lunch pickups were more car break-ins than usual.

It looks like one window-buster had a particularly busy night on August 5, even if he or she didn’t end up stealing any property. Makes you wonder how many windows are smashed to get to visible property, and how many might just be vandalism.

  • Between 3pm Monday, July 29, and 7:45am Tuesday, July 30, someone smashed the rear driver’s side window of a 2007 Honda sedan parked on E 22nd Street near Foster Avenue, stealing a suitcase, earrings, and tennis shoes altogether estimated to be worth $300. No arrests were made.
  • Between 1am and noon on Wednesday, July 31 at E 16th Street near Newkirk Avenue, someone entered a neighbor’s 2013 Honda sedan, taking her GPS and removing, then discarding, a bag of clothes next to the vehicle. Surveillance footage was available, but no arrests were made.
  • Between 5pm on Sunday, August 4 and 6am on Monday, August 5 at E 16th Street near Beverley Road, the front passenger window of a neighbor’s 2011 Lexus sedan was smashed and the door dented, causing over $250 worth of damage. No surveillance footage was available of the incident, and a police canvass of the area turned up negative results.

  • Between 10pm on Monday, August 5 and 6:30am on Tuesday, August 6 at Rugby Road near Beverley, the front passenger window of a 2000 Toyota sedan was smashed. The vehicle owner said no property was taken. No surveillance video of the incident was available, and a police canvass turned up no results.

There wasn’t security footage available at most of the incident locations–unlike on Stratford between Church and Caton, where some super sleuth neighbors recently used video to track a bike thief down themselves. Does it make you consider investing in some?
