A Lotta Pasta
Among the casualties of Sandy are the Lower Manhattan restaurants and markets without power. With most of the Manhattan below 30th Street getting a sense of pre-industrial New York life, those stores that rely on refrigeration are suffering.
Gourmet Italian grocery Russo’s, located in the East Village, found a solution. The mozzarella and pasta store shipped all perishable goods to its Park Slope sister store, somehow getting everything to Brooklyn before the river crossings were open to non-emergency traffic.
The result? A lot of pasta. Russo’s workers struggled to get everything into refrigerators below-ground while keeping up with heavy customer demand.
If you’re out restocking after the hurricane, while you’re there consider picking up some extra non-perishable items for our NYC neighbors who need help. You can still drop off items at a few places in Park Slope.
