Pesky potholes, be gone!

Numerous crater-pocked streets throughout Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Borough Park, and Coney Island will be touched up this summer, announced City Council members Mark Treyger and David Greenfield this week.

Treyger and Greenfield worked closely with Brooklyn Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Keith Bray to identify the streets across the 44th and 47th Districts that are most in need of repairs, based on road conditions and traffic volume. The work is scheduled for the summer months when schools are closed and many residents are away on vacation, in order to pose the least amount of inconvenience to drivers and pedestrians.

Treyger said he secured $400,000 in this year’s city budget to include additional streets in this summer’s repaving schedule.

“These resurfacing projects will bring relief to thousands of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians who currently have to dodge potholes and crumbling pavement as they use our streets. We have already seen great progress over the past month as 25th Avenue, 28th Avenue, Cropsey Avenue, Avenue U and other areas were repaved, and this effort will continue with additional projects across the district over the coming weeks,” said Treyger.

Greenfield, who also secured extra money in this year’s budget for crucial road work, commended the DOT for its responsiveness to the needs of his district.

“Smoother streets are safer streets. That’s why I added extra funds to the budget to make sure that my district is prioritized. I am thrilled that the DOT took our suggestion of repaving Boro Park, Midwood and Bensonhurst streets this Summer when many residents are out of town and school are not in session. That means less congestion on our local roads,” said Greenfield.

In Treyger’s district, the following streets have been included in the DOT’s spring and summer resurfacing schedule:

  • 28th Avenue from Bath Avenue to Cropsey Avenue
  • Cropsey Avenue from Shore Parkway to Bay Parkway

Many of the neighborhood’s main streets have already been repaired, including 86th Street from 18th Avenue to Stillwell Avenue and Kings Highway from McDonald Avenue to Bay Parkway, thanks to requests from Greenfield, Treyger and Assemblyman William Colton. Treyger has also requested that the DOT resurface Stillwell Avenue from Kings Highway to Harway Avenue as soon as possible.

Signs will be posted notifying residents of parking restrictions and street closures prior to the start of each project.
