7th Avenue F/G Subway Station Mezzanine Has Permanently Closed
PARK SLOPE – The mezzanine level of the 7th Avenue F/G subway station on 9th Street has permanently closed as part of a $400,000 MTA project to renovate the station, Patch reported last week.
The mezzanine, which spanned between the 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue station entrances, closed for good on Tuesday, January 23.
The station renovations, which are supposed to “allow for faster and easier access to the platform level,” according to a MTA representative, started in 2016 with the removal of four vertical “roundabout” turnstiles and replacing them with waist-level turnstiles on both the 7th and 8th Avenue ends of the station. The MTA agent booth that was previously located at the center of the station has now been moved to the 7th Avenue entrance.
The closure of the mezzanine has angered several locals, as News 12 reported, forcing many to walk outside in the rain Tuesday morning.
In November 2016, Council Member Brad Lander, Assembly Member Robert Carroll, and dozens of neighbors launched a campaign for the MTA to install a much-needed elevator at the 7th Avenue F/G subway station. With the loss of the mezzanine level, it seems the proposed $15M project might now be an even greater necessity.
