The week of April 19-25, the 72nd Precinct received reports of two robberies, two assaults, two grand larcenies, one auto theft, one car crash, one DWI, one forgery, one case of aggravated harassment, and one dead body. The following is a list detailing a few of the more unique and pressing cases.

Street Attacks

A 27-year-old Hispanic woman was walking home at 9:20pm on Sunday, April 24 when a man approached her from behind, said “Hola,” and then, when she turned around, grabbed her necklaces and began dragging her along the sidewalk at the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and 54th Street. The chains eventually snapped and the man fled on foot towards Fifth Avenue. He is described as a dark-skinned Hispanic male standing six feet tall, last seen wearing a red sweatshirt.

Two days earlier, a 37-year-old Hispanic woman was walking on Fourth Avenue near the corner of 60th Street at 9:50pm when four Hispanic males attacked her, punching her and stealing her cell phone before fleeing westbound on 60th Street, say cops.

Terrible Crash

Police arrested a 58-year-old man and charged him under the city’s new “Right of Way” law for driving into a 67-year-old Asian woman as she walked in the crosswalk — with the light — on 52nd Street at Sixth Avenue at 12:23pm last Wednesday, April 20, leaving her with severe head trauma and in critical condition. The driver had been going eastbound on 52nd Street and making a left turn onto Sixth Avenue when he struck the woman.

Body In The Park

Police are seeking help in identifying a man estimated to be around 45 years old who was found unresponsive on a bench at Martin Luther King Jr. Playground at Second Avenue and 56th Street last Thursday, April 21. He was later officially declared dead at NYU-Lutheran Medical Center.

The man is described as being 5-feet-5-inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. He was found wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans, pink pullover, white sneakers, black sneakers, underwear, a red-and-white beaded bracelet, and with a wallet in his pocket with $27 in cash.
