7 Places To Find Ice Cream In Kensington

7 Places To Find Ice Cream In Kensington

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and the heat over the past few days has given us a hint of what’s to come. It’s also given us an appetite for ice cream! We’ve rounded up some of the places in the neighborhood where you can grab a cone — if we missed any of your favorites, let us know in the comments.

Ice Cream Sign at Moondos Grill

While walking in the steamy afternoon heat yesterday, we passed this very welcoming sign outside of Moondos Grill at 424 Church Avenue at E 5th St. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to stop in for a scoop, but those sorbet and ice cream options sound pretty tasty. Has anyone tried them?

Mister Softee Ice Cream Truck on Ditmas Ave

Of course, there are several Mister Softee ice cream trucks stopped around the neighborhood, including this one spotted in front of the CVS on Ditmas Ave at E 5th, and one that’s stopped regularly outside of PS 139’s playground on Coney Island Ave at Newkirk. In addition to soft serve ice cream with all kinds of toppings, they’ve got milk shakes, character ice cream pops, popsicles, and more. If you’ve ever stopped at one, you’ve stopped at them all.

Kathys

Kathy’s Italian Ices (422 Greenwood Ave) took over what used to be the Uncle Louis G’s space near Greenwood Playground, and opened for the season back in March. One of the most popular items is the brownie sundae, which is made with Kathy’s homemade brownies.

Carvel (203 Church Ave at E 2nd) was packed yesterday afternoon with kids looking for an after-school treat, and adults seeking something cool and refreshing, and, possibly, familiar. Carvel ice cream is one of those things that just doesn’t change, and the flavor you might remember from childhood is pretty much what you’ll still find. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that it was Wednesday, when the shop offers 2-for-1 deals on certain items.

Ice Cream Case at Lark

Just east of Coney Island Avenue, Lark (1007 Church Ave) has some of the fanciest ice cream available in the area. They usually serve six types of Brooklyn-based Blue Marble ice cream, though at the moment, ice cream is temporarily unavailable.

Klein's Ice Cream House, via Yelp

Klein’s Ice Cream House (3624 15th Ave, between 36th/37th Sts) has a couple of pretty shining reviews on Yelp, saying the “ice cream and soft serve is delicious and affordable, with many flavors and toppings to choose from, and it’s all homemade,” and noting that the staff is friendly but that you should “prepare for a mob scene if you happen to come in on a time when the kids are out of school and not observing the Sabbath.” Plus, it’s close to Dome Playground, which is certainly a nice place to sit and enjoy a cone.
