A 66-year-old man managed to beat back three attackers who tried to rob him in an elevator in Coney Island, police say.

The attempted robbery occurred at about 7pm on Monday, June 15, in a building near West 33rd Street and Surf Avenue. According to police, the three suspects followed their target into an elevator, where one of them punched the victim in the head while another reached for the cellphone on the victim’s waistband. The third suspect tried to remove the contents of the victim’s pockets, police say.

The man fought off his attackers, who fled without taking any loot, cops say, and thankfully the victim was not hospitalized due to the attack.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects. The police describe all suspects as black men — the first was last seen wearing a denim jacket, white shorts, and white sneakers, another has short dreads, while the third was last seen wearing dark pants and a black hooded sweatshirt with a zipper.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and then entering TIP577. All calls are kept confidential.
