[UPDATE] 65-Year-Old Man Killed When Pushed Onto “R” Train Track At Jay Street-MetroTech

[UPDATED: Thursday, January 4 at 2:10pm] Edward Cordero, 18, of Brownsville has been charged with manslaughter and assault in connection to the death of Jacinto Suarez, police have announced.

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN – Jacinto Suarez, 65, of Staten Island was killed on Wednesday after being pushed onto the southbound “R” subway track at the Jay Street-MetroTech station, according to police.

At approximately 2:35pm on January 3, police say that Suarez got into a dispute with an 18-year-old male on the “R” train platform. The dispute escalated, police say,  and the 18-year-old suspect punched Suarez, causing him to fall down onto the track.

Police say Suarez was not hit by a train and was already back up on the platform by the time they arrived at the scene and believe good samaritans may have helped pull him up from the track, according to ABC7 New York. EMS transported Suarez to Brooklyn Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 18-year-old suspect was taken into custody but has not been charged yet, a police representative said Thursday morning. The rep added that the identity of the suspect has not been released since the incident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed yet.

The New York Daily News however has identified the alleged suspect as a Brownsville resident who recently stopped taking his medication for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He will be taken to Bellevue Hospital for a psychiatric exam, according to the paper.

The cause of Suarez’s death was a massive heart attack, according to the Daily News, but police would not confirm this Thursday morning.
