6/14: 25th Anniversary Holocaust Memorial Gathering

Hizzoner Mayor Bloomberg is making his way down to Sheepshead Bay for the 25th Annual Gathering & Exhibit at the Holocaust Memorial Park on June 14th at noon.

The Holocaust Memorial Park is New York’s only outdoor tribute to those that perished in the Holocaust under the Nazi regime. The Holocaust Memorial Committee, an organization charged with overseeing the memorial, welcomes the community to join them and the mayor in a gathering of somber remembrance.

Sponsored by Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, the Holocaust Memorial Committee and the Lena Cymbrowitz Foundation, this year’s event will honor two heroic gentiles who saved many from the brutal tyranny of the Nazi regime. Irena Sendler saved 2,500 Jewish children by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto, providing them false documents, and sheltering them in individual and group children’s homes outside the ghetto. She paid dearly for her heroism, including imprisonment and torture by the Gestapo and, after the war, by the communist Polish state. The committee is also honoring Irene Gut OpDyke, who saved a dozen Jews and aided others. Her acts are currently depicted in the Broadway play, Irena’s Vow.

The exhibit will also feature speeches and musical performances, and a candle lighting ceremony by survivors and youth.

The Holocaust Memorial Park recently announced it will add memorials for non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust, including homosexuals and gypsies. The park also garnered attention after Nazi-related graffiti was found nearby. We hope many make their way out to the service to show support for the growth of the park’s scale, and to make a statement against hate and injustice everywhere.
