5 Questions For Grey Sky Appeal
Local rap trio Grey Sky Appeal is comprised of Allston MCs Subtex and Outwrite and producer Taj Campman. Since moving to New York last year, the Boston Phoenix’s choice for Best Hip-Hop Act of 2012 has forged a relationship with Converse Rubber Tracks, recorded at Adrian Grenier’s Wreck Room Studio, and found an artistic oasis and supportive community in Ditmas Park. Learn more about their history, music, and upcoming projects below.
Who are you, where are you from, and when did you start making music?
We are Grey Sky Appeal and we are from planet Earth. We’ve been making music as individuals for over a decade and three years as a group. Our group consists of producer Taj and emcees Subtex and Outwrite. We are magic.
How did you meet and start working together?
We all met in Boston through the local hip hop scene and ended up recording and performing music together. We began recording an EP which eventually turned into a full-length album.
How has has Ditmas Park affected your music, industry connections, and fan base?
Ditmas Park has become a new home, kindly welcoming us since we came from Boston a year ago. The people here are wonderful. It might not be the central hub for music, but it’s a nice neighborhood outside of the city where we can concentrate on our life and music. Brooklyn and New York have been amazing experiences so far, full of new people and opportunities.
Tell us about your latest album and how it’s been received.
Our last album was created during our transition from Boston to New York. It was received wonderfully in Boston, New York, and beyond, but we look forward to beginning our new album in Brooklyn. One of the major benefits for us in moving to Brooklyn is being able to use Converse Rubber Tracks recording studio. They’ve been very supportive of us and given us great opportunities.
What’s next for Grey Sky Appeal?
We have an EP with Qwel from Typical Cats on deck, ready to be released this year (with some secrets included). We have also just begun our 2nd LP and are very excited to release new music this year. Videos will come alongside the new albums, too. Converse has been very supportive of us, putting us on many shows and featuring our songs in international commercials and download cards in the US. There’s a lot to come from GSA in 2013.
