5 Fun And Fantastic Ways To Pay Homage To Pi Day

Friends, neighbors, Brooklynites – lend me your ears. St. Patrick’s Day may be Thursday, but today, today, is a day of awakening. Today is Pi Day.

The official Pi Day website explains that “Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.”

It’s a day to show the world that mathematics can be fun. (Editor straightens her glasses, and gives a snorting laugh).

Seriously, though, who doesn’t love Pi? Pi is irrational. Pi is transcendental. Pi will continue throughout infinity and beyond. Pi is good.

In honor of Pi, we’ve put together a list of Brooklyn ways to celebrate with the kids:

•    The weather isn’t ideal for a Prospect Park jog, but if you’re a member of the Armory YMCA in South Slope (or don’t mind dodging raindrops outside), hit the track to walk and/or run 3.14 miles. You’ll want to work up an appetite, because…

•    Four & Twenty Blackbirds is offering 3 pie slices for $14 at both of their Brooklyn locations (439 3rd Avenue and the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library).

•  If you’re noshing on pi(e) at the Central Library, spend some time afterward exploring books on Albert Einstein – the legendary genius celebrated his birthday on 3/14.

•    No dinner plans? Table 87 is getting into the spirit of Pi Day – as is GrubHub, who is donating 3.14% of all sales using the code PiDay to The National Math and Science Initiative.

•    Finally, bask in the awe of your children. How? Show them that 3.14 backward spells PIE.

How is your family celebrating Pi Day?
