At least 42 homes in Midwood are without power due to an electrical fire that occurred just before midnight on Monday evening, according to a spokesperson for Con Edison.

The FDNY says a smoking manhole was reported near the intersection of East 7th Street and Avenue N at 11:29pm. Emergency responders put out the fire, which knocked out power on the block, within a half an hour. Video taken by Midwood – Flatbush New Blog founder Mike Wright show neighbors wandering in the darkened streets with flashlights.

Con Edison said they expect to restore power by 3pm. But the energy company may have to close a section of Avenue N while workers replace the burnt cable.

Several other electrical fires have caused power outages in nearby neighborhoods this summer, including an overheated cable that knocked out power at the Kings Bay Y and an electrical fire in the basement of a seven-story building on Avenue Z that sent two people to the hospital.
