Mayor de Blasio’s IDNYC initiative — which allows New York City residents 14-years and older to sign up for a government-issued identification card, independent of immigration status, enabling cardholders access to city building and other additional benefits — today came to Bay Ridge’s Fort Hamilton High School with a new pop-up enrollment center.

The installation of the center, which will allow for easier enrollment from both Fort Hamilton students and area residents, was attended by assembly member Pamela Harris, NYC Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, and Commissioner Nisha Agarwal of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.

Among the benefits IDNYC card holders can enjoy are a free year of membership with the New York Road Runners and discounts at Modell’s Sporting Goods and Barclay’s Center events.

“We want all New York City families to know that it is now even easier for high school students to get an IDNYC,” Chancellor Fariña said in a press release about the installation.

School principal Kaye Houlihan commented, “The majority of our 4,600 students have signed up to get the card and there is excitement about all the card offers.”

The pop-up enrollment center closes the IDNYC Week of Action, a mobilization effort to get the word out about the program. The pop up event was the first of its kind.
