300 Ashland Public Plaza—Open Green Space In Brooklyn’s Cultural District
Last Wednesday evening, June 28, Two Trees Management and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership hosted a summer celebration to launch the new public plaza located at 300 Ashland, the new mixed-use development in Fort Greene which is being dubbed BAM South.
Designed by Ten Arquitectos and Grain Collective, the new plaza revitalizes an intersection at the corner of Flatbush and Lafayette Avenues—directly across from the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and in the heart of the Brooklyn Cultural District. The elevated, outdoor space provides locals, theater-goers, shoppers, and visitors a place to meet, relax, eat, and enjoy some sun and greenery.
The 35-story 300 Ashland, contains 379 rental units (76 are affordable apartments) and will be the home to four BAM Cinema theaters, a Brooklyn Public Library branch, 651 ARTS, and the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA). The building will also be home to Brooklyn’s second Apple store, and New York City’s first Whole Foods 365 store, which is slated to open later this year, according to Brownstoner.
While BKLYNER couldn’t make it to Wednesday’s launch event, we did stop by Friday morning, June 30—the plaza was closed off with white and orange construction barriers. When asked when the plaza will actually be open to the public, a worker said they are still putting on some finishing touches and hope to be open this week.
