30-Year-Old Woman Dies In Basement Fire On Homecrest Avenue

A 30-year-old woman died Sunday after being caught up in a basement fire at a two-story residential building on Homecrest Avenue, near Avenue V, the Daily News reports.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, an FDNY spokesperson said. At least 60 firefighters were called to the apartment building, located at 2227 Homecrest Avenue, at 6:31am, according to the fire department. The blaze was under control within an hour.

The woman was taken to Coney Island Hospital in serious, life-threatening condition, according to the FDNY. The fire department could not specify if she needed to be treated for burns or smoke inhalation. She later died of her injuries, the Daily News reports.

Residents in the building were evacuated and cared for by the Red Cross, according to the New York Post.
