CONEY ISLAND AVENUE – Two flags were raised up to celebrate Pakistan’s 70th Independence Day yesterday afternoon in front of Sweetness Bakery on Avenue H and Coney Island Ave.

The second annual event, which also consisted of a barbecue, was hosted by the Pakistan American Law Enforcement Society (PALS).

“We celebrate to show unity with the community,” Zahid Mehmood, the president of PALS told BKLYNER. “It is to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence day among people from the Pakistani descent.”

In attendance were people from the neighborhood, the NYPD, and loud Pakistani music.

But the green and white Pakistani flag wasn’t the only flag being raised.

“Every time we raise the Pakistani flag, we raise the American flag too,” Mehmood said. “We are proud Americans, as well as proud Pakistanis.”
