2016 Greenest Block In Brooklyn, Commercial Category Winner: Fort Greene
Congratulations to the many green businesses on Fulton Street between South Portland Avenue and South Elliott Place, first place winner in the commercial block category of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden’s annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest.
“For the second straight year, the Fulton Area Business (FAB) Alliance is thrilled to have another block of its businesses recognized for their efforts to beautify Fulton Street in Fort Greene,” said Phillip Kellogg, FAB Alliance Executive Director.
The award highlights the beauty Fulton Street has to offer from the planters at Fowler Square, to the spectacular rooftop garden at Black Forest Brooklyn, to the tropical plantings that evoke an island setting at Brooklyn Moon Cafe, to the fantasy landscape in the windows of Versailles Brooklyn, to the lush planters and landscaped tree beds at Greene Grape Annex.
“These businesses and others show what’s possible when they work together to create a block that looks absolutely FAB,” Kellogg added.
The Greenest Block in Brooklyn is an annual contest that promotes streetscape, gardening, tree stewardship, and community development throughout the borough. Awards are given for greenest residential and commercial blocks, best window box, greenest storefront, best street tree beds, best community garden streetscape, and sustainable practices. The project is supported by GreenBridge, the community environmental horticulture program of Brooklyn Botanic Garden, as well as Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
Last year, Fulton Street between South Portland Avenue and South Oxford Street won first place in the same commercial block category for the gorgeous greenery sprouting in Fort Greene.
This year’s neighboring honorees include the Mid-Atlantic Block association in Boreum Hill, which came up second in the commercial category, the Lincoln Road R&B Block Association, taking home the Residential Block bronze for its greenery on Lincoln Road between Bedford and Rogers Avenues; and Lefferts Alliance Community Togetherness Block Association and East 48 Street J & K Block Association for honorable mentions in Prospect Lefferts Gardens and East Flatbush.
Other blocks in Park Slope, Flatbush, and Bedford-Stuyvesant took away numerous awards for the community’s beautiful landscaping. Check out all of the award winning blocks here.
