So you want to enjoy Halloween like a kid, but you don’t want to be surrounded by them? As much as a reputation Park Slope has for being all about children, there are just as many Halloween events for adults in the area this year. Here’s your ultimate list of scary, ridiculous, curious, and — at times — booze-filled things to do to celebrate:
“Witchcraft Through the Ages” (Haxan) – Polka music! Butter Churns!! 16mm silent film screening with Victrola!!!
When: Monday, October 26, 8pm
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue (at 7th Street)
What: What can we say about Witchcraft Through the Ages (Haxan) other than the ominous warning that you will never think the same way about the butter churn again. Well, there actually is a bit more to say about this splendid, hallucinatory spectacle of devils, demons, witches, priests, and butter churns. From its opening depictions of the medieval cosmos, to the satanic escapades at its core, to the strange postscript that jolts us into the modern age, it is a highly idiosyncratic work of silent-era cinema. The movie will be shown with an assembled soundtrack from 78 records DJ’d “live” upon the Victrola by filmmaker and drollerist Joel Schlemowitz. We must warn you: any patrons discovered churning butter during the screening will be forcibly removed by the ushers.

TinyRhino: Halloween

Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street (between 3rd and 4th Avenues)
What: TinyRhino is The Theatrical Drinking Game. It is also UglyRhino’s take on the ten-minute play festival. Every month we commission six playwrights to write new plays, each including the same five dramatic elements. If you join us for TinyRhino, you’ll be given a list of these elements. They might show up at any time, in any order, and with any frequency. When they do show up, do you know what that means?! DRINK!! Every TinyRhino also features music, drink specials, and a cocktail hour following the performance.

Come As You Are / Express Yourself 80’s & 90’s Halloween Party

Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street (between 3rd and 4th Avenues)
What: Pregame with us on Friday, October 30th (because Every Day Is Halloween) for an All Hallows’ Eve Eve blowout featuring the best of the 80s and 90s spun by DJ Steve Reynolds (mix master of Party Like It’s 1999), horror movie and music video projections by Stephen Pitalo (Music Video Time Machine), a haunted photo booth by Ventiko, $5-$7 drink specials, and lots of candy. So. Much. Candy.

Weird Al-Oween

Where: Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club, 514 Union Street (between 3rd Avenue and Nevins Street)
What: Bring your weird self in your (however loosely) Al Yankovic-themed costume to partake in festively Weird Al-tractions like: Ample Hills I Love Rocky Road Ice Cream Eating Contest The Like-A-Surgeon Operation Station, and a lot more!

A History of Ectoplasm: An Illustrated Presentation by Shannon Taggart

What: Why Ectoplasm? Harry Houdini famously wondered this in his scathing critique of modern Spiritualism. Since it’s first appearances in Victorian era séance rooms, this mysterious substance has managed to seduce, disgust and intrigue believers and skeptics alike. In this talk, Shannon Taggart will present an illustrated history of ectoplasm, and share her photographs of the contemporary mediums currently in its pursuit.

The Rub
When: Saturday, October 31, 9:00pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street (at 2nd Avenue)
What: The Rub began in the summer of 2002, as a party where Brooklynites with good taste in music could come together, get wasted and dance until the wee hours of the morning. Even in that first year, it was clearly something special, garnering praise from the Village Voice (“best party in Brooklyn to dance sweatily to smart music”), New York Press (“best party in NYC”) and many others. Ten years later, the original formula still holds true: great dance music mixed well, affordable drinks, and real people; no dress code, no bottle service and no celebrity DJs.

Park Slope Civic Council Halloween Parade

Where: Starts at 14th Street and 7th Avenue
What: Walk along with your creepy, crawly, and fantastically costumed neighbors to a party at the conclusion point at the Old Stone House.

The Griff and Joe Halloween Scaretacular (filmed in front of a live audience)
When: Saturday, October 31, 7:00pm (door), 7:30pm (show)
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street and 5th Avenue
What: Featuring 38-year warm-up comic veteran Nick Turner, magic from the mysterious Tanya Solomon, a seasonal “How-to” segment from Matt Beacon, comedy extraordinaire from Matthew Silver, an educational segment from Alejandro Kolleeny, and music rap from Handjob Academy!
How much: $10, tickets available in advance. 21 and over. This event will be mixed seated/standing. Arrive early for best seat selection.
Crazy Since Da 90s: Halloween Edition

What: We wanna take you back back, back and forth to an amazing time and place called the 90s. This awesome decade spawned some of the best hip hop, r&b, house, and alternative music ever created so we’re giving it a proper bow down like a good party should.

Be Cute Or Die!

Annual Halloween Party At The Gate

Where: The Gate, 321 5th Avenue (at 3rd Street)
What: Check out the annual lineup of special seasonal, pumpkin, and cellared ales, and watch the parade from the patio! Come in costume or buy one of those beers and get a raffle ticket — win a bar tab! — then stick around for raffles drawings at 10pm, 11pm, and midnight.

Halloween Bash

What: The annual party includes lots of prizes and, if you get there early, they’ll have free, festive cupcakes.

What: Fans of the movie Road House will rejoice as Pork Slope will be service Road House-themed drinks that are both awesome and terrible in that roadhouse way. Patrick Swayze-themed prizes will be given for the best costumes.
