11 Awesome Purim Parties Around Sheepshead Bay
Sheepshead Bay’s Jewish institutions prove that there’s more than just one way to celebrate Purim. With disco and dining, kids and cooking, carnivals and comedy, there’s something for everybody this year.
The Jewish holiday kicks off next Wednesday evening. Celebrating the story of Esther, who rose to become queen of Persia, and who foiled the evil Haman’s plans to eradicate the Jews, it’s a time to eat yummy cookies, wear costumes, and give to the poor.
To help you find your party, here’s a list of local Purim events, with some for the kids and families, and some for adults eager to cut a rug to celebrate their people. L’chaim!
Purim Celebration at Shorefront Y – Sunday, March 1, 3:00 p.m to 5:00pm. – 3300 Coney Island Avenue – Costume contests, delicious treats and kid’s activities and two incredible performers: Master Mystifier Rogue, a magician featured on America’s Got Talent, and an animal show with AriSafari. Purim Carnival at Kings Bay Y – Sunday, March 1, 11:00am to 1:30pm – 3495 Nostrand Avenue – A community celebration with free hamantashen, giveaways, kosher food, music and fun. Pre-Purim Hamentashen Baking Classes at Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach – Multiple dates – 134 West End Avenue, #1 – Two types of cooking classes, one for mommy and me and another for kids only, The Tiny Chef Mommy-Me Hamentash baking classes ($15), for toddlers, infants and mommy, take place Tuesday, March 3, with hour-long sessions at 10:30am and 5:30pm. Purim and Costume Party at Congregation Israel of Kings Bay – Wednesday, March 4, 7:00pm – 3903 Nostrand Avenue – The party kicks of with the Megillah reading at 7:00pm, followed by celebration at 7:45pm. Purim Kids Bash at Land O’ Fun – Wednesday, March 4, 6:00pm to 9:00pm – 2955 Coney Island Avenue – Organized by the Chabad of Sheepshead Bay, the program includes a “Dream Spa Salon” for girls, bumper cars, a playground spread across three levels and much more. Celebrate Purim at Kehilat Moshe of Sheepshead Bay – Wednesday, March 4, 6:30pm – 2472 East 28th Street – An evening of fun, featuring a Purim play by KM Kids Masterpiece Theatre, a costume contest, pizza and make your own sundaes! Please note: There will be children’s entertainment during the Megilah reading and throughout the entire evening. No charge for admission. RAJE Purim Masquerade – Wednesday, March 4 and Thursday March 5 – 2915 Ocean Parkway – A two-day event that kicks off at 6:30pm Wednesday, featuring a dinner buffet followed by a Purim comedy skit and costume contest. On Thursday there will be morning services, and in the evening a Megillah reading at 4:45pm followed by a Purim meal with lots of L’chaims. Event is for college students and young professionals. $10 suggested donation. RSVP here.
“Purim in Africa”-Themed Family Party at the Sephardic Lebanese Center – Thursday, March 5, 5:00pm – 805 Avenue T – A festive meal with live music and entertainment provided by African Drum Cafe.
