It’s #NationalWaffleDay! On August 24, 1869, a man named Cornelius Swartwout received the first U.S. patent for the waffle iron (though it really was just an improvement on existing designs that go back centuries). Want more history of waffles? Mental Floss did an excellent post last year, check it out!
To celebrate, here are a few amazing waffle places in Brooklyn — in no particular order of course.
- Sweet Chick (Williamsburg + Prospect Heights)
This cute shop offers delicious waffles as well as fried chicken, desserts, and cocktails. What a combination! It’s become so popular that there are four locations across the country, from the two in Brooklyn, to one in Lower East Side in Manhattan, all the way across the country to Los Angeles.
2. Waffle Cabin (Park Slope)
Address: 427 7th Avenue
Along with its popular sugar waffles, with many toppings to choose from including chocolate chip marshmallow, and Belgian chocolate drizzle, this shop also offers coffee and ice cream. You can also find them in Long Beach, Long Island, as well as Colorado and California.
3. Buttermilk Channel (Carroll Gardens)
Address: 524 Court Street
This pleasing-to-the-eye shop has just one location, in Carroll Gardens! It offers tons of options for dinner, lunch, kids, and brunch. They even have cheddar waffles.
4. Pies ‘n’ Thighs (Williamsburg)
Another cute waffle shop in Williamsburg. It offers a ton of variety (breakfast, lunch, dinner). “Two pieces of fried chicken and two buckwheat waffles topped with cinnamon butter & strawberry,” makes a filling dinner.
5. The Pink Tea Cup (Clinton Hill)
Address: 120 Lafayette Avenue
This family owned shop is located in the heart of Clinton Hill, offering dinner options as well as brunch.
6. Arbuz Cafe (Sheepshead Bay)
Address:1706 Sheepshead Bay Rd
Arbuz means watermelon in Russian. But what do watermelons have to do with waffles, you may ask? “Just like arbuz, all of our products are light, healthy and refreshing,” their website states. This is mainly a dessert shop, with a great waffle selection: Russian Caramel Sauce with Berries Waffle, Nutella and Banana Waffle, Peanut Butter and Jelly Waffle, and Cream Cheese Waffle (along with many more).
7. Jimmy’s Diner (Williamsburg)
Address: 577 Union Avenue
This aesthetic diner is located in Williamsburg, and has just about the most delicious waffles. On its breakfast menu (which is served all day), there’s chicken and waffles with country gravy on the side. Not a breakfast person? Check out the sandwiches, snacks, and burgers instead! But do try out the waffles and let us know what you think!

9. Mango Seed Restaurant (Prospect Lefferts Gardens)
Address: 757 Flatbush Avenue
You may or may not have tried chicken over waffles. But this Caribbean-style restaurant offers salmon over waffles instead, and folks LOOVE them. Not a salmon lover? They have jerk chicken, too. And if you ever want anything catered, MangoSeed has you covered!
10. Rustik Tavern (Bedford – Stuyvesant)
Address: 471 Dekalb Avenue
This restaurant offers brunch, dinner, and lunch options. Its waffles with a side of chicken – need we say more. Check it out yourself!
Let us know whom we missed!
