The Day: Free Bike Helmets, Brooklyn Past and Present, and Local Theatre
Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
Today is hopefully the last day of rainy weather until Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Its forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms during the day and tonight, with a high of about 84 degrees and a low near 70. Saturday and Sunday look to be twin beauties: Mostly sunny skies with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. (Monday, with the same forecast, makes it a triplet.) Locals, don’t forget to post your pictures from the weekend on The Nabe’s Flickr page.
Here’s the news from around the nabe:
- The New York City Department of Transportation hosts a bicycle helmet giveaway today from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Cumberland Walk at the Walt Whitman Houses, reports Myrtle Minutes. To receive a helmet, you’ll need to attend the event, learn how to correctly fit a helmet and then sign a waiver for yourself or your child. The helmets are free while supplies last.
- Love New York City history? The New York Daily News has published a series of photographic mash-ups that combine archival and present-day images from around the Big Apple. This combo depicts the corner of Pacific Street and Classon Avenue, where an auto crash attracted a crowd on July 28, 1957. The series also includes past-and-present scenes of Hicks Street in Cobble Hill and Court Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
- Truthworker Theatre Company stages two performances of “BAR CODE,” which it describes as “a performative analysis of the school-to-prison pipeline,” this Sunday at 2 and 4 p.m. at JACK on Waverly Avenue. Led by performer and educator Samara Gaev, Truthworker trains city teens and young adults in hip-hop theater. There’s a suggested donation of $10 to $15 for each performance.
