Dining Review: Oasis Diner As One Of The Last Old-School Brooklyn Diners
There once was a day in Brooklyn where you could get with your friends in the morning, or late at night, at your local diner to eat breakfast anytime and drink a bottomless cup of coffee served up by a friendly waitress who knew your name.
The golden age of Brooklyn diners is long gone now. Some say it died with El Greco or the Flame, but at Oasis Diner at 2132 Flatbush Ave in Marine Park, the glory days are alive and well.
On this cold Wednesday morning, the diner was full of Brooklynites who, for the most part, all knew each other. Nearly every customer that walked through the door was greeted with an “ay!,” and offered a coffee how “they usually take it.”
In this big city, Oasis Diner, which has been open for 35 years, keeps small town values at the forefront. And then there’s the food.
I ordered the standard breakfast dish — two eggs, bacon, home friend, and toast. I like my eggs over-easy and, in true professional style, they came out perfectly. There’s no feeling more satisfying than cutting into a perfectly fried egg and watching the yolk drip out.
The meal came with juice — I chose apple — and a coffee to round the whole ordeal out into the perfect way to start any day. Without my asking even once, my coffee was refilled three times.
Before I was halfway through my meal, the check was dropped off, which all Brooklyn diner-goers know is a classic move. I wasn’t being rushed out; I sat there for an hour after my meal without so much as a side-eye.
For the satisfying meal and abundant supply of caffeine, it cost me $9.75 before tip. Where else in Brooklyn can you eat a fantastic breakfast with all the works for under $10?
The diner is family-owned and is in its third generation of ownership. The manager on duty, George, was too busy to sit and chat but he was absolutely in his element behind the counter.
“This is the best job I’ve ever had,” he said while cashing a customer out.
