Man Killed By 2 Train While Walking Subway Tracks
PROSPECT HEIGHTS – Last night, police watched a man walk down the subway tracks into the tunnel from Bergen Street Station in Prospect Heights.
He didn’t make it out the other side.
It was just before midnight on Wednesday, October 3, when two uniformed NYPD officers watched the 18-year-old jump down from the platform at the Prospect Heights station onto the southbound track and begin walking north, towards Atlantic Avenue Station—and oncoming trains.
The officers remained on the platform as the individual walked out of sight, police said.
Shortly afterward, MTA personnel confirmed the inevitable: there was a person under the 2 train.
Officers arrived at the scene to find the 18-year old under the train, unconscious and unresponsive, with severe trauma to his body, police said. Responding EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.
Based on tweets from the NYCT Twitter account, the brakes on the 2 train were activated, likely in an attempt to forestall the fatal crash:
An investigation into the death is underway, and the medical examiner will make the final ruling as to the cause of death.
The name of the deceased has been withheld pending family notification.
