I Got Fried Chicken From A Bodega And It Was Awesome
Last weekend, I asked you where I could find good fried chicken. You told me to go to Yafa Deli and I was happy to oblige. I’m here to report the results: fiery deliciousness.
Located at the corner of Fulton and Clinton streets above the C train, the red piece of paper taped to the window advertising very low prices doesn’t signal you’re about to enter a palace of greasy delights. But the little shop seems more than aware its bird needs no flashy advertisements to draw customers.
“Welcome to Yafa Fried Chicken. All the people told me Yafa Fried Chicken is the best fried chicken,” said Mohammad, the man behind the counter. They have an upscale sister location down the block, but I came here for the genuine article.
Moreover, the chicken doesn’t cost a huge chunk of change. Three pieces (a breast, a wing, and a drumstick) ran me four dollars. Great if you’re looking to grab a quick bite.
To their credit, Yafa Deli also does not scrimp on the napkins or the hot sauce.
Not many things can make you feel really alive, but standout fried chicken can (especially if you’re like me and think about atherosclerosis afterwards.)
The chicken is not heavily seasoned, but it is moist and flavorful. The breading is crispy. This is some very, very greasy chicken. I’d recommend at least one little plastic packet of hot sauce per piece.
I spotted a man walking out of the store. He had the tell-tale white bag in his hand. I implored him to stop. I needed an interview.
“It hits the spot and it’s the best in the neighborhood,” said Nick, a designer from LA who lives a few blocks away.
He took the chicken to go because there aren’t seats. Your chicken won’t make it home. You’ll eat it on the street. It’s that good, even if it’s not truly great.
