What A (Great) Drag! Treecycle On 4th Avenue This Sunday
Want to make sure your Christmas tree becomes mulch, but don’t want to drag it to Mulchfest 2016 in Prospect Park? If you live close to 4th Avenue, you’ve got a great alternative coming up this weekend.
On Sunday, January 10 from 9:30am-12:00pm, the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, the Park Slope Civic Council‘s Forth on Fourth Avenue committee, and Warren St. Marks Community Garden are teaming up for this year’s Treecycle on 4th Avenue event.
Drag your trees down 4th Avenue or to the Warren St. Marks Community Garden between 8:45am and 9:45am on Sunday morning; the truck to pick up the trees should be arriving at 4th Avenue at 9:45am for its first pickup loop.
They’ll collect mainly from 12th, 8th, Union, Sackett, Degraw, Butler, Baltic, and St Marks — preferably near a hydrant, so it’s easier for the vehicles from the Gowanus Canal Conservancy and their pro bono arborists to stop and pick them up. They’ll bring the trees to the GCC Salt Lot for chipping for mulch.
The driver picking up the trees would appreciate assistance in loading the truck to make for a more efficient collection.
And if you happen to spot some trees already out on 4th, drag them to the corner if you can!
There will be a tree counter at the GCC Salt Lot (where the trees will be taken to be mulched) to count trees off-loaded from the Arborpolitan truck so they can document how much our effort added to the number of trees chipped. The January 2015 drag added at least 200 trees to the count. Let’s treecycle even more this year — GCC’s goal is 1,000 trees!
Anyone who volunteers is invited to the Salt Lot, located at 2nd Avenue and 5th Street, on Sunday between 11am-3pm to see the chipping process and enjoy some light refreshments.
