An Accident, A Homicide, and an Unknown: Three Dead in Brooklyn Over Weekend
PARK SLOPE – A would-be robber was electrocuted and killed this weekend when he slipped and fell onto the third rail while attempting to evade police.
Around 7:45 pm on Saturday, August 18, the victim first tried to steal the purse of 83-year old Carmen Fontanes, the NY Post reports, knocking the Park Slope grandmother to the ground and attempting trying to grab her handbag. Luckily, bystanders intervened, and the suspect fled on Ninth Street, where he tried again to steal another purse from a young woman outside St. Thomas Aquinas church.
With responding NYPD officers on their way, the robber gave up his spree and sprinted for the Ninth Avenue R train station, where he hopped on the northbound tracks in an effort to evade the cops. He made it nearly to the Union Street station before he met his end, tripping and falling onto the third rail, which killed him instantly.
Police have yet to identify the deceased.
WILLIAMSBURG – In the early hours of Sunday morning, a man from Crown Heights was shot to death in a park after a house party at the Cooper Park houses in Williamsburg.
The shooting took place around 4:00 am on Sunday, August 19, said police. Kevin Wood, 29, was shot in the chest and killed at Frost Park, near 50 Debevoise Street in Williamsburg.
So far, there have been no arrests made, said police, but an investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Some reports indicate Wood was stepping in to protect a friend who had been involved in an altercation earlier in the evening.
