The largest beer competition in New York State selected the Brooklyn brewery for the top prize at the Great New York State Fair in Rochester over the weekend. The winners of the second annual statewide beer competition were selected from more than 640 competition entries submitted by 120 breweries.

Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in more than 20 different beer categories. A blind taste test of the 23 Gold medalist beers was conducted by 43 judges who picked Threes Brewing’s Belgian farmhouse-style ale Passing Time as the best overall beer in New York State!

Released in limited amounts and aged with a blend of wild yeasts and souring bacteria, the brewery describes Passing Time as having a “tart flavor profile.” Their grisette style brew (a traditional European saison-like beer), is “dry and slightly funky, with tasting notes of raw wheat, lemon-lime, melon rind, spritz and barnyard.” A new batch of Passing Time will be available at Threes Brewing in the coming weeks, the company promises.

“In a time when New York is producing some amazing beer, it is an honor to have been named the winner of the

Excelsior Cup” Threes Brewing’s CEO and co-founder, Joshua Stylman, said in a statement. “It’s especially exciting to see a nuanced style (Grissette) gain recognition over some of the trendier beers available in today’s market. We couldn’t be prouder of the team.”

Threes Brewing’s Vliet Pilsner won a gold medal in the Light Lager category in last year’s competition, then went on to beat out hundreds of other beers to win the title of Best Beer in New York State for 2017.
