The mural on East 16th Street at Newkirk is being covered over, as neighbor KC Bay noticed in these photos on Flickr. It’s clearly part of the construction project to make all the storefronts on the block look the same–and it looks like this is what we’ll lose to it.

According to the mural, it was made possible by OJJDP, Congressman Major Owens, the Brooklyn Arts Council, and the Flatbush Development Corporation. We’re waiting to hear back from the FDC on when this mural went up (and whether they knew it would be covered over in this construction project, or if there are plans to replace it), but Owens retired in January 2007, so it was at least before that. Anyone remember?
