The Open Corner: June #2

The Open Corner: June #2

This week, as part of her exploration of change in the neighborhood, our June artist takes a look at transportation. Take a look and leave your thoughts–both about the work and the subject–in the comments!

Side note: if you click on the street location link below, you’ll notice that some of the faces in the mural are blurred out on Google Street View. Anyone have an idea about why this is?

June Artist: Lolita B.

From Lolita:

Last week, I introduced my theme of change & transformation, using the Cortelyou Road subway station as a metaphor for Ditmas Park itself. This week’s image, shot on Marlborough Road near Cortelyou, continues that theme. I love the location of this bike rack, as change in transportation modes are represented here, in the form of the trolley and the rack itself. In recent weeks we’ve seen a proliferation of these circular racks in our neighborhood, as bikes have become a preferred, cheaper, and greener way to get around. Change is good…

But how do you feel about these particular bike racks? While photographing this one, I was surprised when a passerby commented that he didn’t like them. He said they’re too “artsy.” Do you agree? And are they functional enough (since only one or two bikes can be secured)?

I would still like to know your opinions about the various changes going on in Ditmas Park, from the big chains (e.g., Subway, Dunkin’ Donuts) competing with our veteran Mom & Pop shops….to all the hip eateries now on Cortelyou. IS change good?
