The Herald Square Dash

The Herald Square Dash
Again to Queens-5

If you commute via the Q train above 34th Street/Herald Square in Manhattan, you can relate to this story in the City Room about that moment when you decide whether to switch trains when you arrive at that station. If an N or R train is across the platform, unless it’s announced on your train (which is rare), it’s a gamble on weekday mornings as to which will depart first.

So you have to decide–do I stay on the Q, or do I possibly save a couple of minutes by dashing to the N/R? But if I do, will the Q leave first? One neighbor said you’re better off staying put.

“It’s this grass-is-greener thing,” Courtney Bryan of Ditmas Park told City Room. “You have to stick with your roots, stay the course.”

So what do you do? And is there anywhere else in your commute where you’re leaving your fate to the MTA gods–or do you feel like the whole ride is that, in a nutshell?
