Thank you for making good community journalism possible!

Last night Bklyner had a great night at the 2018 Independent Press Awards (Ippies) from the Center for Community and Ethnic Media at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. The Ippies are the only journalism awards in NYC that recognize reporting by the ethnic and community press. The award-winning journalist, Randall Pinkston served as Master of Ceremonies and NY1’s Inside City Hall Errol Louis and Investigative Journalist, Tom Robbins presented the awards.

Bklyner won first place for Best Editorial/ Commentary for a series of articles and editorials written by Liena Zagare which raised awareness about child safety in light of a new elementary/middle school which opened in September 2017.  The school opened after 3 years of construction but did not have a safe way for children and parents to cross busy Coney Island Avenue to get to school.  The result – two traffic lights were installed.

Bklyner also won 3rd place for Best Investigative/ In-Depth Story for Carly Miller’s reporting on the oil spill in Gravesend Bay that dumped 27,000 gallons last April. The story resulted in local politicians calling on environmental protection agencies and polluters to notify the public when such spills occur.

Finally, Bklyner won 2nd place for Best Online Publication Design.  Last Fall, Bklyner collaborated with Prem Krishnamurthy and Chris Wu of Wkshps to rebrand the Bklyner identity.

Congrats to the other winners:  Sing Tao NY (Best Investigative/In Depth story), Feet in 2 Worlds (Best Social Issues story), El Diario Nueva York (Best Photograph), City Limits (Best Story About a Community), Norwood News, WFUV News and BronxNet Community Television (Best Multimedia Package), Sino Vision (Best Video), The Bridge (Best Online Publication Design)!
