Music is a big part of the culture at PS 193, The Gil Hodges School (2515 Avenue L), so when Department of Education budget cuts hit their music program hard, they did whatever they could to keep it going. Principal Frank Cimino was able to restore partial funding from the DOE after the school year began, and they now have two part-time music teachers.

They’re hoping to raise more funds to brace against future cuts at the school’s Spring Music and Family Festival benefit this Saturday, March 9 from 2-5pm. The Parent Association’s event is for all neighborhood children and their families, and will feature performances from a number of musicians, including graduates of the school, ranging from opera, hip-hop, folk, R&B, rock, Spanish, and Baroque artists.

There will also be kid-friendly activities, raffles, door prizes, and hot food.

You can buy tickets in advance online, or at the door. If you can’t make it, but would still like to support the music program at PS 193, you can make a donation online.
