In a late night session, the New York State Senate passed legislation that alters Governor Andrew Cuomo’s NY SAFE gun law package to exclude retired police officers from strict firearm regulations. The New York Daily News is reporting that the passage of the bill angered senators, not because of its content but due to the hasty call for a vote which allowed little debate.

The amendment was passed 49-14, but, as the Daily News described, the overwhelming majority could not quell the anger of those who thought the amendment was a rush job:

Some Republican lawmakers said they voted against the amendment because they didn’t want to single any group out for special treatment. Others said they did so in protest to demonstrate their support for repealing NY SAFE wholesale, not fiddling with it.

Sen. Greg Ball¬†angrily¬†called the timing of the debate “crap” and mockingly thanked Cuomo for causing a rift in the GOP conference. Sen. Tom O’Mara slammed the legislation as “wrong” and a “sham on the Second Amendment.”

State Senator Marty Golden, a retired police office and a strong proponent of the exemption, argued that the bill was common sense given retired police officers’ knowledge and responsibility when it comes to handling fire arms.

It is unknown if the legislation, which has already been passed in the Assembly, will be signed into law by Cuomo.

  1. This is an absolute OUTRAGE. If guns are so dangerous, then no one should have them.

Why can’t retired and off duty police face the same laws the rest of us do? Why shouldn’t they be forced to call 911 and wait 2.5 hours for their brothers to respond? Remember, GUNS are bad, no one should have one unless they are on duty.

If anyone should be prohibited from carrying a gun, surely off duty and
retired police with their well documented propensity for alcoholism,
mental disorders and extremely high suicide rates- should be.

Instead, there is a protected class of unionized worked who are allowed to enjoy Second Amendment benefits while the rest of us are prohibited from defending ourselves and family from robbery, rape and murder.

  2. What a corrupt fat piece of shit. First he passes that bill that gives

Tax Breaks For Developers Of Luxury Manhattan Apartment Buildings
And now he basically says nobody should have guns except me and my retired cop buddies.

Go eat a fat cock, Marty.

  3. Is this web site financed by the Democratic Party? The Democratic Party-dominated NY State Assembly passed this exemption 96-15 back in May, and no objection, no article. But suddenly, an article appears when there is a chance to blast Golden and the opposing party. I still remember the article about there having been thousands of legal and ethical violations by the New York government. Only Golden’s name was singled out from the thousands, and that for some sort of trivial gasoline usage violation. Let me say I am not in favor of the devious late-night hijinks of the NY government (am I glad I left NY when I read this way of conducting affairs in NY), but let’s be fair in the reporting. Come clean, Sheepshead Bay Bites, there needs to be some disclosure in the interest of truth. Is this web site getting support from the local Democratic Party? It would appear to be.

When you vote in May, you have time to debate, when you vote a few hours before the end of the legislative session, you don’t. So calm your tits about there not being an article or objection in May, because that’s not what the article is about.

  5. Bush signed the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) of 2004, which allowed all current, and retired, police to carry nationwide.

This state law allows retired cops to carry unlimited ammo, not restricted to the 7 rounds citizens are restricted to.
