South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: January 15-18

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from classic French swing and glam rock, to ice skaing and art openings, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Monday:

10th Anniversary Members Show Opening Reception
When: Thursday, January 15, 6-9pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Celebrate 10 years with 440 Gallery! This new group exhibition, curated by Gail Flanery and Amy Williams, features a variety of works from current gallery members. Opening tonight with a community reception, the show runs through February 15.
How Much: Free.

Raphael McGregor
When: Thursday, January 15, 8pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: It’s all about the steel guitar at Freddy’s on Thursday night, when Raphael McGregor takes the stage at 8pm.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, January 16, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Personality Crisis
When: Friday, January 16, 10pm
Where: Supercollider, 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Street
What: Twig the Wonderkid and Friends will “spin glamorous rock n roll and New York gutter punk” at Supercollider on Friday. The event is 21 and up only, so make sure you bring an ID with you.
How much: Free.

Les Chauds Lapins
When: Saturday, January 17, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Travel back to the days of swing, as Les Chauds Lapins (The Hot Rabbits) play rearranged French classics from the ’20s through ’40s.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation

After The Holidays E-Waste Collection
When: Sunday, January 18, 10am-4pm
Where: Prospect Park, 3rd Street entrance
What: You can drop off both working and non-working electronics at the 3rd Street entrance to the park on Prospect Park West, and LES Ecology Center will take them off your hands for either refurbishing or recycling. For a complete list of acceptable donation items, visit the LES Ecology Center website.
How much: Free.

Nature Playtime: Zoo
When: Sunday, January 18, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo
What: The Prospect Park Alliance, Prospect Park Zoo, and Tinkergarten are teaming up (with a little help from the Disney Conservation Fund) to bring families creative play opportunities in the park’s natural areas. Every Sunday through April, those visiting the Prospect Park Zoo will be able to take part in Nature Playtime! in the native plant garden. Look for nature-inspired art, insect observation, playing with snow, scavenger hunts, and more. Want to try some Nature Playtime activities on your own? Download a free activity card here. A new card will be added to the website each month through April.

Figure 8 Play-Date With The Berenstain Bears
When: Sunday, January 18, 2-4pm
Where: LeFrak Center at Lakeside, Prospect Park
What: Hit the ice with Brother and Sister from The Berenstain Bears this Sunday at Lakeside. In addition to skating, kids can look forward to fun family activities like arts and crafts.
How much: $8 admission/$6 skate rental

The City Of Lost Children
When: Sunday, January 18, 10:30pm
Where: Cafe Steinhof, 422 7th Avenue at 14th Street
What: Where can you find a scientist in a surrealist society who kidnaps children to steal their dreams, hoping that they slow his aging process?” Sunday movie night at Cafe Steinhof, of course!
How much: Free.
