South Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: March 9-11

Don’t wait until this weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from tropical rhythms and jazz hands, to meditation and poetry, South Slope is definitely the place to be through Wednesday. Here are some of our favorite events from around the area:

Tropical Vortex Monday
When: Monday, March 9, 9:30pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: Make your way to Barbes on Monday night, as they channel some tropical rhythms to help melt what’s left of winter’s ice and snow. This week, it’s all about cumbia, when Cumbiagra takes the stage.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.

Toddler Tuesday
When: Every Tuesday, 9:30am-12pm
Where: Prospect Park, LeFrak Center at Lakeside
What: Toddler Tuesdays are still going strong every week at Lakeside. Kids ages 2-5 (and their caregivers) will have a blast with instructor-led play and music activities, healthy snacks, and open skate time with skate rentals, helmets, and pad packs included. Ice skating grippers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for caregivers not comfortable on the ice.
How much: $15 per child, free admission for accompanying adult ($6 adult skate rental available).

The Art Of Living Meditation Workshop
When: Tuesday, March 10, 6-8pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Stress and life in the big city often go hand in hand, but the Park Slope Library is at the ready with a meditation workshop, led by volunteer organization The Art of Living. Note that this class is for adults only. No reservation is required.
How much: Free.

Having A Whiskey Coke With You
When: Tuesday, March 10, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Come out to Freddy’s on Tuesday night for “a reading and performance series featuring a community of New York’s finest poets, writers, musicians, performers and artists.” In addition to the scheduled performers, there’s also an open mic. Those interested in reading can sign up at Freddy’s the night of the event.
How much: Free.

Rock With Adam
When: Wednesday, March 11, 10:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Are you ready to rock? Neighborhood kids are definitely in for a treat as guitarist Adam Blotner plays some of his favorite tunes.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.

Folk Sing-A-Long With Katy Stone
When: Wednesday, March 11, 11:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: After Rock With Adam wraps up, the library is getting folksy with Katy Stone. Geared toward children through age 5. As with the above performance, note that tickets are required, so be sure to arrive to the library early and secure your spot.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Glutes In Gear
When: Wednesday, March 11, 7-8pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a belly-busting, booty shaping workout? This two-part class focuses on high-endurance cardio and mat work to build your core, and flatten and tighten your abs and glutes. No registration is required, but be sure to bring your own mat.
How much: Free.

Gypsy George And The Open Road Love Affair
When: Wednesday, March 11, 8:30pm
Where: The Rock Shop, 249 4th Avenue, between President and Carroll Streets
What: South Slope’s Gypsy George and the Open Road Love Affair will perform their first show of the year at The Rock Shop on Wednesday night. If you’re headed to the show, make sure to bring your dancing shoes and jazz hands. “We require plenty of jazz hands,” Gypsy emphasized on the event page. How can you pass up an opportunity to bust out your jazz hands?
How much: Tickets, which can be purchased here, are $7 in advance, or $10 at the door.
