Sled Head: 4 Parks To Take The Kids Sledding
Happy Snow Day! As the northeast continues to get pummeled by a snowstorm, NYC Parks posted a message to Twitter this morning urging New Yorkers to stay out of city parks until the snow starts to taper off (hopefully by early afternoon).
So that means you’ve got some time to feed the kids lunch before bundling them up in snowsuits and trekking over to your local park for some sledding fun. Remember to check back with @NYCParks first to confirm that all is clear.
Here’s a list of 4 parks with lots of inclines and hills covered in fresh powder just waiting for the sleds, tobaggans, saucers, and snow tubes.
Fort Greene Park
Located on Myrtle and De Kalb Avenues between Washington Park and St. Edward’s Street, with 4 main hills, Fort Greene Park is an obvious choice for sledding. For the wee ones, the shortest hill is located near the Willoughby entrance off Myrtle Avenue. Over by the tennis courts is a wider slope with much more space for the more daring big kids.
Prospect Park
Bordered within Prospect Park West, Flatbush, Ocean, Parkside Avenues, and Prospect Park Southwest, a good spot for smaller kids in this sprawling park is on the east side of Lookout Hill. Enter at Prospect Park Southwest at Vanderbilt Street (by the Vanderbilt Playground) and head toward the lake. The Tennis House area is also a popular spot for sledding. Enter at 9th Street and head toward Long Meadow. Another good hill can be found near the Picnic House by the 16th street entrance.
Sunset Park
Located along 41st to 44th Streets, between 5th and 7th Avenues, Sunset Park is basically one huge, rolling hill, making it a good spot to bring the older kids and the toboggan.
Owl’s Head Park
Located in Bay Ridge along Shore Road, Colonial Road, and 68th Street, a good sledding hill can be found at Shore Road and 97th Street, with lots of smaller slopes scattered around the park. Note: Owl’s Head Park does not have a public restroom, so plan accordingly before bundling up and heading over.
