Sinkhole City
Watch your step, and where you steer your car–the sinkholes in the neighborhood are opening up again. The spot at East 17th Street and Newkirk, which was paved over last month, has two holes in the pavement now, and the whole spot is rapidly sinking.
As a reader pointed out at the time: “Cave-ins are caused by water (usually a leaking pipe) eroding the soil under the street so they become DEPs problem. Filling a cave-in is just a band-aid solution.”
A similar band-aid has been applied on Cortelyou Road at Rugby, which has been a problem spot for years. The metal plate that was placed there hasn’t stopped the hole from getting wider around it, though.
And the mops–well, the mops are an unusual and unfortunate choice for alerting people that the hole is there, if that’s what they’re there for.
