Pedestrians once again took over Sheepshead Bay Road this Sunday for the Sheepshead Summer Stroll, a day-long event celebrating the shops and people along the commercial strip.

Thousands visited throughout the day for the event’s second year. Shopkeepers extended their retail stores and cafes out into the street, while organizations like the FDNY and Brooklyn Public Library held interactive exhibits.

Kids played with toys in front of Brainy Academy or got their face-painted by volunteers from the Kings Bay Y, also one of the event’s organizers alongside the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz’s office.

Some of the businesses really got in on the fun.

Anatolian Gyro featured exotic belly dancing and live music from a traditional Turkish band. Infinite Auto Leasing put out a display of luxury sports cars, rivaling the muscle and antique cars at the other end of the strip. T. Kang Karate showed us who not to mess with during some martial arts demos, and Masakari Sushi doled out samples of their delicious fried chicken and rolls.

One of the main events was the return of the Jimmy’s Famous Heros sandwich eating contest, in which nearly two dozen contestants raced to gobble down two feet of Italian subs. Patrick Taylor, Alex Tisch and Bradley Maleh took home cash prizes for winning first, second and third, respectively. All ate the sandwiches down in well under the six minute record established last year.

All in all, it was a great day with great weather, and we look forward to seeing this event grow in future years!
