Sandwich Of The Week: The Union Street From M&S Prime Meats

When you’re feeling the kind of hunger that only a giant, freshly-made hero can satisfy, it’s so great to know that M&S Prime Meats (312 5th Avenue) is there for you. In addition to offering cuts of meat and house-made sausages and cheeses, the butcher shop, which has been under the current ownership for about eight years (and run by a previous owner since 1948), offers some of the best sandwiches in the area.

Their Union Street hero ($7.50) is a good entry to their list of 25 cold sandwiches and 10 hot ones, and they also say it’s one of their most popular. Turkey is cut to order and piled high on a semolina hero, and it’s topped with their fresh mozzarella and house-made pesto. Despite its size, it’s not too heavy, which is perfect for a hot day like today. The pesto helps keep it bright — if you’re a pesto lover, be sure to ask for a little extra on there.

Keep an eye on the board out front for their sandwich and hot plate specials — though, if it’s just too muggy to walk over there, remember that they deliver!
