On Set With Orange Is The New Black At The Parade Ground
We knew Netflix series Orange Is the New Black was going to be filming somewhere near the Parade Ground this morning, but when neighbor William sent us tips about a “Black Adoption Festival” and a truck that might be serving martinis, it seemed like we ought to stop by.
Caton is lined with trailers for blocks, and the Parade Ground is adorned with carnival games and balloons for what seems to be a sort of surreal meet-and-greet sequence between children and the people they hope will become their adoptive parents.
If you haven’t seen the entire first season of the show yet, you might want to stop reading now. What follows isn’t a catastrophic spoiler or anything, but you could choose to learn more about “Crazy Eyes” for yourself first.
The scene we saw being filmed featured one mini-actress at the “Bigger Hearts Adoption Agency” festival attempting to impress potential adopters with acrobatics and song–and when that doesn’t work, using some no holds barred intimidation tactics on a peer.
A personal working theory is that the scene tells some of the backstory of Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, who fans of the first season know was adopted.
It was reported on Tuesday that actress Uzo Aduba, who plays Warren, will be featured more regularly in the coming season–and seeing her entering her trailer this morning makes one wonder if there’s going to be some sort of burlesque, softly-focused scene in which she’ll step into her own flashback as an adult.
As mentioned earlier, William sent this photo of a Martini Craft Services truck–and although their website makes them look like a standard craft provider, he’s pretty darn sure they were serving martinis when he walked by. We didn’t see the truck when we arrived around 10am, though. Breakfast of champions?
