A man suffered a severe heart attack Wednesday afternoon while pulling into a car wash near the corner of Coney Island Avenue and Banner Avenue, sources say.

The FDNY says they received a call at 1:30pm about a cardiac arrest at the Hi-Tek Car Wash located at 2981 Coney Island Avenue. He was rushed to Coney Island Hospital in serious, life-threatening condition. The fire department did not have information on the man’s age.

Community Board 15 Chairwoman Theresa Scavo said law enforcement had notified her about about the incident. She said police temporarily shut down Coney Island Avenue when they arrived at the scene.

“A guy was pulling into the car wash and had a massive heart attack,” she said. “But police have to treat it as a vehicular accident because he was behind the wheel, physically pulling into the car wash and tapped the car in front of him.”

The Twitter account NYC Scanner initially claimed that a pedestrian had been struck by a car. But no authorities reported such an incident had occurred.

City Councilman Chaim Deutsch’s office also confirmed someone had suffered a heart attack at the car wash.

A pedestrian-involved car crash would blemish efforts by the DOT to overhaul the intersection where Coney Island, Guider, and Banner avenues cross. In late August, the department announced it was moving forward on a plan to rebuild the roadway, one if the most dangerous in the neighborhood, in order to make it safer for both pedestrians and motorists.

We have reached out to Coney Island Hospital to find out if the man survived the heart attack and are awaiting a response.
