Labor Day: What’s Open And Closed In South Slope
Are you guys ready for the holiday weekend? We can taste the barbecue and summer cocktails now! If you’re hanging around the Slope tomorrow, here’s a breakdown of what’s open, closed and running on a different schedule.
Government Offices, Parking, and Sanitation (via nyc.gov)
Government offices and courts are closed on Monday, September 2nd in observance of Labor Day. There will be no mail delivery.
Alternate side parking is suspended and you do not have to pay the parking meter. No stopping, no standing and no parking regulations are suspended except where those regulations are in effect anytime or seven days a week.
There is no garbage or recycling pickup. If Monday is your garbage day, put out your garbage after 5:00 PM Monday evening. If Monday is your recycling day, wait until next week to put out your recycling.
New York City public schools open on Monday, September 9th.
The Staten Island Ferry will operate on a holiday schedule on Monday, September 2nd. Service will be provided every 30 minutes between 7:00 AM and 11:00 PM from St. George and between 7:30 AM and 11:30 PM from Whitehall. Hourly service will then resume.
Subways and Buses
While all trains will be running on a Sunday schedule on Labor Day, the MTA is adding extra trains today to help you get out of town–so go!
Libraries
All branches of the Brooklyn Public Library will be closed for Labor Day weekend, from Saturday, August 31 through Monday, September 2..
Banks
Area banks will be closed, including Chase (444 5th Ave at 9th Street and 533 5th Ave at 14th Street), Bank of America (534 5th Avenue at 14th Street), Capital One (516 5th Avenue at 13th Street), and Astoria Federal Savings (459 5th Avenue at 10th Street).
YMCA
Both the Prospect Park (357 9th Street, between 5th and 6th Ave) and Armory (361 15th Street, between 7th and 8th Ave) YMCA will be open on Labor Day, but only from 7am to 8pm.
Medical
South Slope Pediatrics will be closed on Labor Day, which means no walk-in hours this week. All emails, e-messages and phone messages will be addressed on Tuesday, September 3rd.
If you have an emergency, please call the after hour emergency line (718-576-2450), but note that this line is only for emergencies. Do not use for routine questions, camp/school forms, appointments or prescriptions.

Steve’s C-Town (327 9th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue) Regular Hours, 7am to 10pm
Key Food (493 Fifth Avenue at 12th Street) Regular Hours (24 Hours)
Eagle Provisions (628 5th Avenue at 18th Street) 6am to 6pm
Met (595 5th Avenue, between 16th Street and Prospect Avenue) 9am to 6pm
Coffeeshops and Restaurants
Cafe Regular (318A 11th Street, between 4th and 5th Avenue): 7am – 1pm
Cafe Grumpy (383 7th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Street): 7am – 7pm (but they may end up closing earlier if business is dead).
Naidre’s (384 7th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Street): Regular Hours, 7am to 8pm (but they may also end up closing earlier if business is dead).
Sidecar (560 5th Avenue, between 15th and 16th Street): Although normally closed on Mondays, Sidecar will be open for Labor Day brunch at 11am.
