Help Paint the Winning Mural in Newkirk Plaza Passageway
The walls of the dank Newkirk Plaza passageway will get a facelift next weekend, and you can help install it. The Newkirk Cares Collaborative received submissions from local artists and put it to a community vote on the Plaza, and the winning entry, shown above, is from neighbor Susan Jaramillo.
Susan’s piece is called “Ditmas Dreams,” and she says it’s about how everyday people of all kinds pass through this tunnel on an individual journey with individual dreams.
“Everyone has their own way of flying,” she wrote in her proposal. “This mural is meant to celebrate those dreams that all of us share.”
One dream I hope we all share is to make the place we live a little nicer. The community is invited to help paint the mural on Sunday, June 24 from 9am-2pm. You don’t need to be an artist to help paint–you just need to know how to paint by numbers, even kids can help. People will also be needed to help with the completion of a mosaic in the passageway, and take care of young street trees.
Please RSVP here.
