Navigating the high school process is challenging, particularly here in New York City.

Bee Tutored, a local boutique tutoring company, believes the initial process of applying to schools should begin the summer before a student’s 8th grade year. The Fall semester can be very busy and summer is a great time to start thinking about your various options:

Specialized High SchoolsAre a group of 9 public high schools in New York City. The only requirement for admission is the SHSAT, which is offered at the end of October.

Screen High Schools (Public) and Independent Schools (Private) Unlike the Specialized High Schools, these schools consider a complete student profile in their admissions process. Each school has it’s own testing criteria but Independent Schools Require the ISEE or the SSAT.

Performing Arts Schools—To gain admission to these schools, in addition to demonstrating your academic aptitude, you must also exhibit strong artistic skills in the form of an audition and/or portfolio.
