Firefighters Battle High Rise Fire at Trump Village
CONEY ISLAND/WEST BRIGHTON – Firefighters battled a ninth-floor fire in an apartment in Trump Village this morning, injuring one person and forcing the evacuation of numerous residents from apartments on several floors because of spreading smoke.
Fire officials say the fire broke out shortly after 11:30 a.m. at 2942 West 5th Street in Trump Village West apartment building.
Firefighters were met in the stairway by residents trying to evacuate the building in spreading smoke that dipped down into the lower floors. Fire officials say two apartments were involved, but most of the fire appeared to be on the terrace of the main apartment.
The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes, but by then, the fire had caused heavy damage to two apartments, but most of the fire had been located on the shared terrace.
One person was treated by EMS for smoke inhalation and shortness of breath, but the injury was not considered life-threatening, officials said. Firefighters used large fans to ventilate the hallways and stairs after the fire.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but officials were eyeing construction
materials that were piled on the terrace, including paint, pipes and other debris. The fire was under investigation by fire marshals, officials said, but it was not considered suspicious.
