Dog of the Day: Mack
There are so many dogs in Park Slope, but what do we know about them? What are their hopes, their dreams, their favorite places to lift their leg? We aim to find out, one dog at a time. Today, meet Mack, a 7-year-old Rottweiler mix whose owner admits his dog’s got a predilection for squirrels and other male dogs.
How did Mack get his name?
I have a younger brother that named him.
What kind of dog is he?
He might be a Rottweiler mix, but he acts like a hound. I got him from the station the pound sets up for the dogs that are next in line to be put down. It was love at first sight.
Does he have friends?
Yeah. He steals toys, though. That’s his thing. So not as many friends as he should. He has toys of his own, but they’re not as interesting. It’s always nicer to take something off your neighbor’s plate, I guess?
What do dogs think about when they sniff trees or lamp posts?
“Have I peed here before? Is this a nice place to pee?” I think it’s like Facebook for them, and they’re just updating their status every time they pee on a tree.
What’s Mack’s relationship with squirrels?
Oh, he’s a born hunter. He becomes very still and calm. And then he just springs.
What does he do when he catches one?
Well, he’s very interested in the inner workings of animals.
Have you thought about getting him a stuffed squirrel?
He just goes through them. Teddy bears, they’re all gone. They last a few seconds. It’s not worth buying him a $10 toy. It won’t make it.
Any strange personality traits?
He’s gay. It’s not really that strange, but I’m pretty sure he’s gay. It’s unusual for a dog.
How does his sexual orientation manifest itself?
Uh, he licks other male dogs’ privates. It’s a weird thing. I don’t know where he got it. And it’s not a choice.
Is Mack overly concerned with grooming? Does he display any other stereotypical gay attributes?
No, he doesn’t have a big hygiene routine. If he finds some manure, he’ll roll in it.
And if your dog wanted to marry another male dog?
I would support him. And I hope the city would allow him to get married, frankly.
