Car Break-Ins On East 18th Street Reported
There have been at least two car break-ins on E. 18th Street in recent days, including one that happened between Beverley and Cortelyou and the other between Cortelyou and Dorchester, neighbor Nina told us.
Nina reported that the top of her convertible was cut into, and her car was broken in through the top of the vehicle sometime between Wednesday and Saturday.
“They took just change from my car (there wasn’t anything of value),” Nina wrote to us.
The neighbor also said that she discovered a van that was broken into through a smashed window last Friday morning.
Nina added that she wanted to give a “friendly reminder to the neighborhood to lock up tight and not leave valuables in the car.”
While there aren’t statistics specifically on car break-ins, the 70th Precinct has reported an increase in petit larcenies this year, with 1,166 petit larcenies being reported as of October 5, compared to 1,118 at the same time last year, according to the most recent CompStat report. Grand larcenies, meanwhile, have dropped, going from 549 at this time last year to 512 as of October 5, the same CompStat report said.
If you’re concerned about car break-ins, or any other crime, you can attend the 70th Precinct community council meeting on Wednesday, October 29 at 175 Lawrence Avenue at 7:30pm.
